Competitions

CIG 2011 hosts and supports a number of competitions related to computational intelligence and games. Most of these competitions focus on submitting a controller that plays a particular game as well as possible, and allows submissions based on any controller architecture, CI or not.

Simulated Car Racing Championship

The Simulated Car Racing Championship follows on from the 2009 and 2010 championships, and the 2007 and 2008 simulated car racing competitions.

Organizers: Daniele Loiacono, Luigi Cardamone, Martin Butz and Pier Luca Lanzi.

Ms Pac-Man vs. Ghost-Team Competition

Ms Pac-Man, one of the most successful arcade games ever, is a challenging real-time video game where Ms Pac-Man, controlled by the player using a four-way joystick, has to collect pills for points and, at the same time, avoid being eaten by any of the four ghosts chasing her.

Traditionally, the game is viewed from the perspective of Ms Pac-Man and several competitions have taken place in the past where controllers were developed to direct Ms Pac-Man throughout the game. However, the game also provides an excellent environment for testing multi-agent strategies by controlling the team of ghosts; here the goal is to minimise the overall score achieved by Ms Pac-Man.

An efficient simulator of the game has been developed for the purpose of this competition, allowing contestants to connect their controllers using simple software interfaces. This year, for the first time, contestants may provide controllers for either Ms Pac-Man and the Ghost Team or both; in the latter case, collusions between the controllers is prohibited.

2K BotPrize Competition

The competition task is to create a computer game bot which is indistinguishable from a human player. Those entries that pass this test will share the major prize of A$7,000 cash, and will also be offered a trip to 2K Marin’s studio in Canberra. If the major prize is not won, a minor prize of A$2,000 plus a trip to the studio will be awarded. A member of the winning team (either major or minor) will be invited to visit 2K Marin’s studio, at 2K Marin’s expense, up to an amount of A$5,000, in addition to the cash prize.
